Pride of Indiana: Thank-you messages to and from IU employees
Nov. 30, 2016
Pride of Indiana is a regular feature in Inside IU that allows IU faculty and staff to recognize their colleagues for IU-related work they’ve done that goes above and beyond their job duties or responsibilities.
Submit a Pride of Indiana shout-out for a colleague who makes a difference in your department.
Thank you to the following IU employees:
Kathy Wyss, of the Department of Biology, whose nominator wrote: "The biology department wishes to thank Kathy Wyss for her efforts in putting together the Biology Student Award Ceremony, which honors both our undergraduate and graduate students. Kathy spent many long days collecting applicant materials, coordinating selection among a busy group of faculty, and working to ensure that the ceremony went off flawlessly for students and donors. This is no easy task with a department fortunate enough to have many departmental scholarships to offer, a large number of qualified students to choose from, and strict rules about who is eligible for each award. Kathy’s expert knowledge makes this a more manageable process. It was a successful event thanks to Kathy’s dedication to our students and care for their success and well-being."
Vicky Lewis, of the School of Education Instructional Systems Technology, whose nominator wrote: "What would we do without Vicky? She's the point of contact for anything in our department. If I have a question, I know I can approach Vicky, and she will do everything in her power to find a solution (which often means she's jumping through hundreds of hoops) and implement that solution before you have the opportunity to ask her about it. She is the definition of kindness. We are beyond blessed to have her in our department. Thank you for all you do Vicky!"
Steve Erickson, of the Office of the Registrar, whose nominator wrote: "The scheduling of rooms for the Bloomington campus is arduous due to the number of requests and limitations, which Steve handles with ease and with a great sense of humor. I really appreciate his efforts to get rooms assigned in a timely manner, especially with the number of online and phone requests that are dealt with on a daily basis. Steve knows what great customer service is all about, and he is a joy to work with."
Sherri Alexander, of the School of Engineering and Technology, whose nominator wrote: "From the time I started in Engineering and Technology until my last day there, Sherri Alexander in the dean's office was helpful, friendly and so kind. She is always there to help anyone and is such a valuable resource to the school."
Damon Spight, of the IU School of Dentristry Faculty Affairs, whose nominator wrote: "Damon is the cornerstone for staff in my school. He has diligently worked towards strengthening our staff morale and promotes staff excellence and stewardship. He always goes above and beyond with every work task and project, and I admire his professional, kind attitude. No matter what kind of day he is having, he is always willing to lend a kind shoulder and always has a big smile on his face."
Lisa Contino, of the Department of Psychology, whose nominator wrote: "Lisa Contino, senior lecturer in the psychology department in the School of Science, dropped everything she was doing and spent time with a prospective student who was considering transferring to IUPUI. Her compassion and genuine care were astounding. What an amazing faculty member! We are so lucky to have someone like her educating our students. Thank you!"
HelenMarie Harmon, of the School of Business and Economics, whose nominator wrote: "As a new employee in the School of Business and Economics, but not a new employee at IUN, I immediately noticed the wonderful relationship Helen has with each and every student she advises. She not only takes the time to make sure they are selecting the best schedule for them based on their needs, she also becomes their personal cheerleader, giving them motivation to continue even in times of stress. Even after a short time here I realized what a dedicated person Helen is, not just to IUN, but to the students in the School of Business and Economics. In my 19 years of being an employee at IUN, I have never seen such dedication to our students."
Lee Staton, of University Information Technology Services, whose nominator wrote: "Lee Staton always goes above and beyond to help out the regional campus locations by providing support and communication materials. He is always patient and takes time to make sure we understand and follows up to make sure the process is running smoothly. Even though many miles separate our campus locations, he is just a quick video call away and ready to assist. Thank you, Lee, for a job well done!"
Frances Yates, of the IU East Library, whose nominator wrote: "Frances, what a fantastic evening you made possible by bringing the author Steve Pemberton to campus. The opportunity provided to students, faculty and community members will long be remembered. Steve Pemberton's life and his presentation will help make all of us much more aware of the value of a kind word or gesture given freely and sincerely to another person."
