IU's new Teaching Online Series is a self-paced, customizable design and teaching resource available for download as an open educational resource.

The series currently includes seven modules that include guidance on creating measurable learning outcomes and effective assessment strategies as well as fostering faculty presence and student engagement.

The modules allow faculty who are new to digital education to start building a robust student experience from the ground up with explicit attention to instructional design principles and appropriate pedagogy. The modules demonstrate appropriate use of a range of external tools -- from planning matrices in MS Word to interactive quizzing tools to more complex instructional tools such as Voicethread -- and also point users to supporting scholarly resources, such as peer-reviewed articles that contextualize the design recommendations. The modules are designed to allow users to easily curate a single package that aligns with their own needs.

"The Teaching Online Series was created for the common good -- we’ve had the opportunity to build a useful development tool, and our colleagues and partners in higher education and K-12 are excited to use the tools," said Matthew Gunkel, group manager, eLearning Design & Services, the unit that manages the series. "Our team is building additional modules, and we’re looking forward to partnering with faculty at IU and elsewhere who want to collaborate."

Collaborators have included instructional designers and technologists at IU, as well as IU faculty. The vision for future evolutions of the series includes additional faculty guest authors both from within IU as well as pulled from the broader higher education and K-12 communities.

In 2012, the university announced IU Online, a major strategic investment in online education to accelerate the development and delivery of quality online courses and programs at IU's campuses statewide. IU Online builds on a strong foundation for excellence in online education: IU was named among the nation’s best online degree programs in the 2016 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Online Education Program rankings.
