Steve Moore has been appointed head coach of IU East's new NAIA men's soccer program.
Moore comes to IU East from Clarke University, a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics program in Dubuque, Iowa. Moore produced two of the top three seasons in the Clarke men's soccer program's 32-year history during his tenure with the Crusaders.
Moore has a history of program-building throughout his coaching career. Moore coached the women's soccer program at Bethany College in Kansas from 2007 to 2011, where his first two teams doubled and then re-doubled the program's victory total from the year prior to his arrival.
Moore's first college head coaching experience came at Concordia University Chicago, where he coached the men's and women's teams. His 2005 men's team won the conference championship. The women's team posted the best winning percentage in the program's history to that point the same year.
Moore also served as an assistant coach for the NCAA Division I women's program at the University of Central Arkansas and as the head soccer recruiting coach for the National Collegiate Scouting Association.
"It's a great honor to be named the inaugural head men's soccer coach at Indiana University East," Moore said. "The support and enthusiasm for athletics here is undeniable, and to be able to combine that with the level and notoriety of an Indiana University education made this move a no-brainer."
Moore earned his bachelor's degree in accounting at Greenville College, where he was an NCCAA All-American as a goalkeeper.
Moore will focus on recruiting the Red Wolf roster during the 2016-17 school year. The team will begin NAIA competition during the 2017-18 school year.
IU East estimates 50 total student-athletes will participate in the men's and women's soccer programs."There's going to be a lot of work that goes into getting this program started, but the potential here is off the charts, and I couldn't be more excited about this opportunity," Moore said.
IU East's soccer teams will compete alongside the school's other athletics teams in the newly renamed River States Conference. The league will have 10 men's and women's soccer programs for the 2017 fall season.
The addition of men's and women's soccer brings the total number of National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics varsity sports offered at IU East to 15. The Red Wolves currently compete in men's and women's basketball, women's volleyball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's tennis, and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field. IU East offers more NAIA sports than any other IU regional campus.
